Last season, both the Rams and Eagles were playoff favorites with the latter winning the Super Bowl. Both team had high upside offenses with crushing, turnover-inducing defenses. Most notably, their defensive lines. Somehow, both teams improved their trench fighter ranks.
The core of the Philly defense came from their ability to push the pocket and pressure the QB last year. Led by All Pro Fletcher Cox who is a fucking STALWART in that front four, this team gave QBs and O Lines fits for days. Fletcher Cox is both a guy you need to give a double team and still be worried about penetrating the backfield. He only makes players around him better which made Chris Long and Brandon Graham very tough to block off the edges.
Not to mention, your team went and traded for Michael Bennett from the Seahawks this offseason. That's it right? NOPE. Your 2nd and 3rd best defensive tackles are Haloti Ngata and Timmy Jernigan. Excuse my French but FUCK, that's ridiculous. Good luck NFC East. Alex Smith, Eli Manning and Dak Prescott are all dead.
Now, this in a way, is comparing apples to oranges. This is a 3-4 base defense compared to the Eagles' 4-3. BUT, the DT and NT positions for the 3 are unbelievably talented and DEEP. The Rams D has always had their rock as Aaron Donald, also an All Pro defensive tackle. Oh yeah, important detail, he is also the reigning Defensive Player of the Year. He had 3 of the best 6 games of all interior defenders for all of 2017-2018. He is a one man wrecking crew.
And he just got help. He already had the likes of Michael Brockers and Dominique Easley rotating in next to him who are both sneaky good at backfield penetration and disrupting the pass. Easley is just injury prone.
Well that top unit, just added a man that will absorb all the double teams, Ndamukong Suh. The behemoth who is more well known for stomping on opponents on the ground and tossing quarterbacks to the turf like weightless rag dolls, is now on the LA Rams signing a 1 year deal. Suh is such a wild card. You never know what version of him you will get. Whether it's active in disruption or he takes out your back or QB, he is mean and violent as they come. When he played for the Dolphins, my in laws and my dad would always spend hours worrying before and throughout the games thinking "Yup, this is when Suh loses his shit and kills Tom Brady. Just tears him limb from limb, season over." He is fear inducing and an absolute savage. Oh what's that you say? The Eagles line still seems better? Oh well, I forgot to mention the Rams will most likely use their first round pick to draft a top defensive end like Marcus Davenport. I am not even diving into the fact the Rams picked up both Marcus Peters and Aqib Talib this offseason. SHEESH.
I hope these two teams clash in the NFC Championship next season because it would be one for the books.
Gorilla out. RAH.
