Nolan Ryan is known for being a tough Texan. The Absolute Savage pitched in the major leagues for 27 seasons, holds the all time strike out record with 5,714 Ks, and was still throwing in the high 90s well into his 40s.
One of my favorites memories of the Ryan Express is when he was hit square in the mouth by a batted batted ball he misplayed in the second inning. Despite bleeding all over his jersey and face, Ryan still pitched 7 strong innings and struck out 8.
The injury required 6 stitches after the game.
